Krewella Interview

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): We are here with two thirds of Krewella as Yasmine is sick at home. Though we hope she feels better soon, we are glad to see that you guys are good and healthy.

For those who don’t know, Yasmine wrote a lengthy post about what has gone into putting your debut album together for the past year and the anxiety of its impending release. It was a very emotion filled piece that provided insight into something a lot of fans don’t see. What were your thoughts on what she wrote?

Jahan (Krewella): I thought it was a really beautiful piece. I think it stemmed from all the hate that Daft Punk has been getting from their album. The internet is an amazing medium for expressing your thoughts freely. I think it’s really important to express your opinion, but when it comes to the point where there are really established artists who are saying things about the Daft Punk album, which makes me think, “If you are so secure in your career, why are you bashing another artist for what they are doing?” It was really important for her to tell everyone how hard we have been working on the album. Everyone thinks we are just partying and touring all the time, but in between touring we are working on the album. It’s not all partying.

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): I thought that was a fantastic question. I also thought I wanted to proof read it. There were a couple of grammatical errors.

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): There were typos?

Jahan (Krewella): That’s what happens when you write in a stream of consciousness.

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): I don’t fuck with typos. Seriously.

Jahan (Krewella): Kris hates that, but that’s what happens sometimes, as far as lyrics go, when you are writing in a stream of consciousness. You don’t want to have to go back and edit everything. We’re college dropouts so we’re allowed to do that.

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): You actually also recently had a lengthy post of your own dealing with bullying, losing and PLUR. For those who have not read it, can you briefly go over what you said, and what fans can do to help?

Jahan (Krewella): Yeah. I started this theme. Sometimes we post “#GetWetWednesdays” or “#ThrowbackThursdays.” I started the theme “#KrewDayTuesday”, #KrewDayTuesday on our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. I posted this picture of a group of four guys holding a poster that said, “Screw a Fella.” It’s kind of a play on words for Krewella. I thought it was very clever. It was funny. It made me laugh. I really enjoy anyone who has a sense of humor at shows. I don’t think people who actually take the time to make posters like that have bad intentions. All of us are very openly sexual, so I was not offended by that at all.

There are a bunch of comments on there saying, “Fags,” “Look at these homos,” and “Look at these douche bags.” Probably 70% of the posts on there were negative. That really set me off, and inspired me to write this post about how a lot of our lyrical content, especially in our album coming up, is really about uniting everyone. We are in a genre, dance music, that is about peace, love, unity, and respect. That’s what PLUR means.

I think people need to remember why they come to shows. A lot of people come to shows. We meet them at “Meet and Greets.” And they say, like, I came here alone. They don’t have friends, They feel like they are losers, they feel like they are loners. They come to these shows to feel like they fit in. People need to remember that and be very accepting and welcoming to others.

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): What is the most creative or entertaining thing a fan has ever done or created for you guys?

Jahan (Krewella): Let’s bring out the poster.

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): Let’s do it.

Jahan (Krewella): Will you hand us the “Get Well” poster?

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): It’s an audio interview.

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): We will take a picture of it.

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): It says “Get Well Soon”. There is a painting, and it’s so beautiful.

Jahan (Krewella): We’ll get there!

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): It’s a painting, and it’s beautiful and you are going to look at it and say, “Wow! It’s so beautiful and fantastic in all these colors.”

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): And there is Harry Potter.

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): Yeah. There is Harry Potter and there is fucking Yoda.

Jahan (Krewella): Okay. Shut the fuck up.

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): Where’s Yoda?

Jahan (Krewella): There is no Yoda on here.

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): And no Mr. Bean.

Jahan (Krewella): This is beautiful. Yasmine is my sister, and I’m not even making
posters for her or sending her letters, but I have a whole goody bag from fans. We just didn’t meet her.

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): I missed three shows. I have not gotten one goody bag.

David: It’s because you miss flights.

Jahan (Krewella): No, no. That is because he is drunk all night.

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): Is it because I’m drunk or I’m working on your album? I don’t know.

Jahan (Krewella): It’s because he’s drunk actually. Yasmine was super heartbroken about this. She feels really bad about missing the show.

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): Then Yoda showed up and it was fine.

Jahan (Krewella): We played a show five months ago, and she was sick and had a fever. She was almost throwing up on stage. She kept chugging along. She was amazing.

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): You guys do all that motion.

Jahan (Krewella): Yeah. She kept going. I kept looking at her, and she would turn around and gag. The whole crowd never knew what’s up. They probably thought that she was drinking too much, but she was sick.

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): So Krewella has been around since 2007, but it was not until last year that you really blew up and the world finally took notice. If music had not worked out for you career-wise, where do you think you would be today?

Jahan (Krewella): If music was not a part of our lives? If we couldn’t touch music at

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): Yeah. At all.

Jahan (Krewella): Because I would probably be a songwriter. He would probably be a

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): No, no. I’d be in banking.

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): Banking?

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): Yes. Banking is a good career.

Jahan (Krewella): Could you smuggle me some money or something?

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): No, no. That’s illegal.

Jahan (Krewella): I don’t know how it works.

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): He would be legit.

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): I met someone on the plane today who lived half the time in China and half the time in America and they didn’t pay taxes anywhere. I said, “Just don’t live there.”

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): Wow.

Jahan (Krewella): Is that what banking means?

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): You meet interesting people.

Jahan (Krewella): He met a sex therapist on the plane.

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): Banking. It was the same person.

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): How did that go?

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): She was a sex therapist, but she didn’t live in China for too long and didn’t live in America and didn’t pay taxes. Don’t hang on anywhere for too long because you can get caught. She said, “I don’t pay taxes.”

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): So you’re dealing in finance. What would you do?

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): Finance! Yeah. Yeah.

Jahan (Krewella): If Krewella never worked out for us I would probably be a songwriter
for someone.

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): You know how you became a songwriter? Because I told you to become a songwriter.

Jahan (Krewella): I know. Of course.

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): You would be in communications. That is what you would be.

Jahan (Krewella): No. I was studying mass media and communications at University of Chicago so I would probably be doing something like studying theory. I love to study theory.

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): I thought you were going to say “feet”. I don’t know why.

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): Or the makeup industry.

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): There you go.

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): You never know.

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): He could make millions. You have a series of videos on YouTube called “KrewLife”, where you have a camera and crew follow you around, capturing a lot of what goes on behind the scenes on your tours. What is the funniest story that you have that “KrewLife” didn’t capture?

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): I know it! I know it!

Jahan (Krewella): They didn’t capture that!

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): That didn’t capture it?

Jahan (Krewella): Yeah.

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): Okay. You can do both.

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): The funniest thing that has ever happened in our entire careers, in the last five years, was when our manager got too fucked up.

Jahan (Krewella): Not our tour manager, David, by the way. This guy is straight.

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): No, no, no. Not David.

David: It’s not me.

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): Our manager got fucked up.

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): We are clearing the air.

Jahan (Krewella): We won’t say the name though.

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): No. Somebody.

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): One of them. Yeah.

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): Before this happened I poured 4.5 liters of Jameson on his head.

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): That is very specific.

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): 4.5 liters. I think that’s what it was. It was the Jameson bottle that was this big. He went back to the hotel and he started peeing in the hallway. He just pulled his dick out and started peeing in the hallway. That was guaranteed the funniest thing that’s ever happened. I don’t know what’s funnier than that.

Jahan (Krewella): That’s pretty funny.

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): Your new single “Live for the Night“, just came out a few days ago, on July 2nd. Where did you get your inspiration for it?

Jahan (Krewella): Yasmine and I actually wrote those lyrics about two years ago. Right?

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): Yeah. About two and a half.

Jahan (Krewella): We wrote that song before “Alive.” Which is weird because “Alive” came out first. It was a weird time in our lives when we’re working every single day. It was before we were playing many shows. All three of us were living at our loft in Chicago. Yasmine was not 21 yet, so I was giving her fake ID. I think I had just turned 21. We were so mesmerized by this whole clubbing life. We had a streak of two weeks of going out to the clubs. We were exposed to clubs for the first time. It was the first time we felt like we were going to go out and let loose and get fucked up and come home. The next day we would just write. I was really inspired by that whole feeling of it being night time and just letting loose. I think that’s what the song is about. It’s just a really feel good song. We want to make people feel happy when they listen to it.

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): It’s about going to shows and living your life and all that; being out with friends.

Jahan (Krewella): I think one of the most amazing things about music is that we write in all different types of emotions such as sad, angry, vengeful lyrics, but happy lyrics always prevail, happy songs.

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): Well guys, we just wanted to say how amazing it is to see how far you’ve come. We have been huge fans since “Play Hard” first came out. There is no better feeling than seeing the whole world finally take notice of you guys.

Jahan (Krewella): Thank you.

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): Thank you so much.

Jahan (Krewella): I know you have been there for a really long time. Thank you.

Dayanna Guerrero (Ascendance Radio): Thanks, guys.

Jahan (Krewella): Cool. Thank you so much.

Kris (Rain Man/Krewella): Thank you so much.
