Alex M.O.R.P.H Interview:

Dayanna Guerrero: We’re here with one of the most sought after producer, re-mixer and legend in the making Alex M.O.R.P.H.

So Alex, last time I checked you had somewhere around six of your tracks in Beatport’s top 100, what would you say is the magic ingredient in making hits that cause M.O.R.P.H. gasms?

Alex M.O.R.P.H.: (Laughs) That’s a pretty new word. I saw that today, people invented it on Twitter and then formed something “M.O.R.P.H. gams”, I like that one. I never heard that before but if people are totally into it like that, it should be something on the right way. Well six tracks on Beatport are not too bad I think. But what is the receipt of that? It’s just enjoying the music and the music I like or we like and for some reason I’m on the right way and people like the same stuff like me and we’re on the same channel and that’s good.

Dayanna Guerrero: From the looks of it Armin van Buuren has been one of your top supporters in this industry, and back in late last year you were able to get your “Hands on Armada” and remixed some classics. Why did you pick these tracks?

Alex M.O.R.P.H.: Well, these tracks I really like and are favorites since ages. Such old tracks like from 90, 98 like “Veracocha” and these tracks I’ve played, I think, a thousand of times. When we figured out the concept with Armada and I got this really big back catalog and when they said “okay, chose 18,19 tracks to remix” these where the first chose ones. You can be pretty sure there will be a follow up, “Hands on Armada Part 2”. I’m not sure when it will be, maybe not 2012, but maybe 2013, we will see.

Dayanna Guerrero: This year Ultra Music Festival was able to assist Armin van Buuren in the monumental 500th episode of A State of Trance celebration by giving Armin his very own stage to host ASOT 500. How does it feel to know you will go down in history as being part of this event in Miami, Florida?

Alex M.O.R.P.H.: It’s a very good feeling I must say. It was in general my first time at Ultra Festival. To be part of a historic thing like this (ASOT 500) I was on stage and then at Ultra Festival so it can’t be better you know? It can’t be better, it’s the best thing to give a debut at a big festival, or at the world’s biggest festival these days; Ultra Music Festival.

Dayanna Guerrero: You have a new project called Triple A, can you tell us more about it?

Alex M.O.R.P.H.: Triple A it’s Armin van Buuren, Alex M.O.R.P.H and Ana Criado and we just invented the first track called “Winter Stayed” and you can listen on my set today on ASOT 500 (my version of “Winter Stayed”) and Armin’s version is already known on his compilation. We are very happy that it worked out and then the people are so into it because reactions are massive, people go mad about “Winter Stayed”. Luckily it’s a great opportunity to have a project with Armin van Buuren together because I like his music; he likes my music, so it was the best ingredients to team for something.

Dayanna Guerrero: You’ve worked with some of the biggest names like Armin van Buuren, Paul van Dyk, Above & Beyond, ATB, Super 8 & Tab, and so many more, is there anyone you haven’t worked with but would like to?

Alex M.O.R.P.H.: For some reason the two names still missing on my list, Tiesto and its Ferry Corsten so maybe they will hook me up and whatever, why not?

Dayanna Guerrero: You’ve done a countless amount of remixes, how do you manage to keep things fresh?

Alex M.O.R.P.H.: I look around what other people play, produce, what people enjoy you know? I was listening today to Laidback Luke because it’s not all about our music because there’s so many sorts of music out and when Laidback Luke is playing one of the fifty gigs a year at one of the biggest festivals there must be a reason. So, I listen to that stuff as well and sometimes get an influence of that and then you have a cross over track and it’s interesting to see which parts of instruments they give attention to. We use a lot of basslines, sequencers and some guys on the other side of music they use a tom instrument, or should I say Bongo. It’s really interesting and I’m happy if it still sounds fresh (what we do) and I think you have to be open a little bit to what other people produce and to what they enjoy. Mostly what they enjoy because when you see the reaction of crowds when a bassline drops in after a special break or how it’s used or a clef it’s really an important thing.

Dayanna Guerrero: You’ve had an ongoing successful career and each year you manage to make better than the last. Are there any projects or releases you are currently working on that you can tell us more about?

Alex M.O.R.P.H.: I built a motor bike.

Dayanna Guerrero & Alex M.O.R.P.H.: (Laughs)

Alex M.O.R.P.H.: Its no joke, I really built a motor bike (laughs) but I’m sure it won’t be finished this year anyways. Yeah, it will be coming out, new Alex M.O.R.P.H. singles this year, an Alex M.O.R.P.H. EP, working on a follow up for “Walk the Edge”, and many people liked it to say it that way.

Dayanna Guerrero: Very popular track!

Alex M.O.R.P.H.: And yeah I teamed up on a project with Chriss Ortega called “Miami Nights” and it’s a little bit more crossover stuff and he’s more of the house scene than what I do but now we combined forces on a new side thing and yeah let’s have a look what comes out at the end of the day.

Dayanna Guerrero: Well Alex, thank you so much for the interview and can’t wait to see what you have in store for us in the future.

Alex M.O.R.P.H.: Thank you as well.
