Christian Burns Interview:

Dayanna Guerrero: We’re here with Christian Burns, the man whose electronic dance music career began with the hit with Tiesto called “In the Dark”. Since then, Christian has become a staple in the industry and has had a massive following by dance music fans around the world.

So Christian, you teamed up with Tiesto back in 2007 for the track “In The Dark”. Now people may not know this, but the song came about when Tiesto contacted you through MySpace. Would you ever have considered a career in dance music if this hadn’t occurred?

Christian Burns: Well, do you know what? The funny thing is that at the time, I was doing a lot of rock music. He contacted me and I didn’t actually know who he was at the time because I wasn’t listening to a lot of dance music at all, I was just stuck in my little rock bubble. It was something completely different for me and it opened so many doors for me and it opened my mind to so much great music that I don’t know if I would have gone down that avenue if Tiesto wouldn’t have gotten in touch, but I have to thank him because it’s been great.

Dayanna Guerrero & Christian Burns: (Laughs)

Dayanna Guerrero: You’ve written and done the vocals for huge tracks such as “Forget Me” “Suddenly” “The Emergency”, and more recently “This Light Between Us”, “Save This City” and so many more. How long does it usually take to get these songs from start to finish?

Christian Burns: I suppose it’s different every time but usually I’ll get the main body of a song done in a day. I’ve got a studio over here in the UK so it all depends on how inspired I am by the tracks. I mean, all of them tracks, especially the ones that BT sent me to work on, are just so good and so inspiring, they came together pretty quickly really.

Dayanna Guerrero: Your band, The Bleach Works, recently did a song with Phonic Funk called “Save This City”. What was the inspiration behind its lyrics?

Christian Burns:
Well “Save This City”, I had an epiphany, it came that one. I don’t know, sometimes lyrics just kind of happen and you don’t know where it comes from but it just fitted the song perfectly and it was great to work on that track, I really like that one.

Dayanna Guerrero: Me too!

Dayanna Guerrero & Christian Burns: (Laughs)

Christian Burns: I’m glad you like it! It’s got a nice vibe to it, that one.

Dayanna Guerrero: I really do, I mean I sit there and I sing it and I’m like “I wonder where he got these lyrics from?”

Christian Burns: Who knows where they come from? Who knows? It’s a secret, trade secret!

Dayanna Guerrero: And if you tell us you’d have to kill us?

Christian Burns: Exactly!

Dayanna Guerrero & Christian Burns: (Laughs)

Dayanna Guerrero: Now, you’ve worked with so many big artists like Benny Benassi, BT, Matt Darey, Armin van Buuren and more. Is there anyone you haven’t worked with that you would like to?

Christian Burns: Wow! John Lennon? Well, that’s not going to happen.

Dayanna Guerrero & Christian Burns: (Laughs)

Christian Burns: Do you know what? I’m blessed and lucky to have had the opportunity to work with so many great DJ’s. I mean, they’re the best that the world’s got to offer and I’m just loving it at the moment. I’m getting to work with some other great people. I’m working with Tiesto again, with Paul van Dyk, Marcus Schossow. So I don’t think of it like that, there’s no one in particular, but there’s so many talented people out there that I’m excited about this year. I’ve got some new collaborations coming out.

Dayanna Guerrero: Now I’ve read that when Tiesto first contacted you through MySpace you had no idea who he was, for your most recent work on “This Light Between Us” with Armin van Buuren, did he contact you through Facebook? And did you know who he was?

Christian Burns: (Laughs)

Christian Burns: It was all done a little bit different with Armin. Of course I knew who Armin was. After getting into the dance scene and the electronic dance music scene I really loved his work and I thought we could make something really great together. So I actually contact him this time. I got my management to get in touch with his people and try and set something up. You know he liked my voice and he sent me the track for “This Light Between Us”, and I was just blown away. That was another one that came together pretty quickly.

Dayanna Guerrero: Anyone following you on Twitter can see that you’ve formed a tight-knit group with your fellow Armin Only tour mates. Why do you think you’ve connected so well?

Christian Burns: Do you know what? I think the main reason is that they’re all really nice people. We spend a lot of time together. I mean, I’m singing one song on the show, and the song is like 8, 9 hours long sometimes so we have a lot of down time backstage to hang out. We just have a giggle; they’re all really great people so we get along great. It’s like a little family.

Dayanna Guerrero & Christian Burns: (Laughs)

Dayanna Guerrero: You have a new track with Glenn Morrison called “Tokyo Cries” can you tell us more about it?

Christian Burns: The track is actually out and yeah, Glenn got in touch with me, I like his style and we just said let’s have a crack at something. Again, it’s one of my favorite tracks that I’ve done recently, and it’s quite laid back, but I like it and I love the guitar elements in it.

Dayanna Guerrero: A lot of the videos you post online are about your dog Mylo, does he ever get to go with you on tour?

Christian Burns: Mylo doesn’t get to go on tour unfortunately. I think that would be a recipe for disaster. I mean a Jack Russell roaming about backstage; he would be up to mischief all the time. So no, he stays here; he doesn’t go on tour with me. But I’m actually back home at the moment so it’s nice, I’m getting to spend a lot of time with him.

Dayanna Guerrero: Aww!

Christian Burns: He’s like my best buddy.

Dayanna Guerrero: I read that you might be doing a tour in China. Have you ever been to Asia before and what are you most looking forward to on your trip?

Christian Burns: Do you know what? I’ve been to Asia, been all over Asia but one place I’ve never been to is China. So yeah I’m really looking forward to that, I’ve never been to China. I’m going to just go, try and soak up, and see as many things as I can in the short amount of time I’m there, I think I’m there for a week. So I know it’s a pretty busy schedule but I’m going to try and fit a lot of sightseeing in because it’s one place that I’ve always wanted to go to. So heck of a job I suppose!

Dayanna Guerrero: So Christian, what do the coming months have in store for you?

Christian Burns: Well the coming months, I’m actually working on some stuff, some new music at the moment for a release later on in the year. I’ve got a new single coming out with Glenn Morrison, I’m on tour with Armin van Buuren so I’m busy doing that. I’m also doing my own shows as well and working on a track for later on in the year with Paul van Dyk, I’ve got a release coming out in May with Tiesto on his “Allure” album so yeah Busy, busy, busy!. It’s all a go in the Christian Burns camp at the minute, can’t complain though.

Dayanna Guerrero: Do you miss home with all that traveling?

Christian Burns: Yeah, you know its simple things like mom’s soup. She makes the most amazing chicken soup; I miss that when I’m away. I miss my family, my dog, but you know it’s great and the thing is now with video Skype and stuff you can video call so it makes it a little bit easier I suppose.

Dayanna Guerrero: Well Christian thank you so much your time, it was really nice getting to interview you and I wish you the best for 2011!

Christian Burns: Thank you very much and don’t forget if anyone wants to come and check me out on Twitter or Facebook you can come and follow me!
