Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike Interview

In just a couple of years Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike‘s production and DJ‘ing skills has led them to bypass the standard “build your way to the top” saying. Their skills have led to plenty of hits and now a track that has been made the official theme tune for the Belgian 2011 festival Tomorrowland. With a growing presence in Belgium, Europe and massive reactions around the world, there’s no doubt that Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike are headed for super-stardom. We have a chance to interview these cool ass brothers and here is what was said:

Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike Interview:

Dayanna Guerrero: We’re here with Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, two of the five producers behind the Tomorrowland 2011 smash hit “The Way We See The World“. Ironically enough, two more of the five producers just finished their set here at Mokai in Miami.

So Dimitri & Mike, you’ve been known to really get the crowd going around the world. How do you guys prepare for these shows and do you have any surprises in store for us tonight?

Dimitri Vegas: To be honest, [at] a show like this we have a lot of our friends here from Miami; we have a lot of people from Belgium who are here. This is like, how can you say, an intimate gathering so we’re going to wing it – whatever. You know what I mean?

Like Mike: Probably a dinner party.

Dayanna Guerrero: So you’re free-styling the whole thing?

Dimitri Vegas: Yeah definitely. We have a lot of new productions, a lot of new tracks and a lot of new edits to try out and nights like tonight is the perfect moment to do something like that.

Dayanna Guerrero: That sounds awesome! It took you guys only a couple of years to take over the dance music scene and in my opinion this isn’t an easy task for one person, let alone two. What would you say about the overall dynamic between you two and would you say that this dynamic, along with your individual skill-sets is the reason why you have had such a successful career?

Like Mike: Yeah, I could think so. We each have our part in the whole gig. He does the DJ’ing, I get the crowd to go crazy, spray some champagne on them, pour liquor in their mouths, and [you] know whatever. I think since we’re brothers it’s kind of an easy connection.

Dimitri Vegas: It’s really hard to actually pin point what is the key to the success of a certain artist. I think that things just kind of go.

Dayanna Guerrero: Evolve.

Dimitri Vegas: Yeah and you just kind of ride the wave.

Dayanna Guerrero: So it took you guys made a bit of a creative Youtube video in which you told the world you would be joining Steve Aoki as well as other artists on the Deadmeat Tour, which you have just finished up. What was the highlight of the tour for you?

Dimitri Vegas: Vancouver?

Like Mike: Or San Diego?

Dimitri Vegas: Yeah. I mean San Diego and Wonderland were technically also part of the Deadmeat tour but those were like two huge ass festivals. For sure to say like LED and Wonderland, especially wonderland, it was just out of this world. But the actual tour (minus festivals), Vancouver was really off the hook. I mean all the shows were great, we kind of discovered a new crowd with that.

Like Mike: Some young kids know how to party. Canadian young kids, I don’t even want to start on that.

Like Mike & Dayanna Guerrero: (Laughs)

Dimitri Vegas: And it just so much more for us. It’s a totally different crowd than the club and festival crowd that we’re used to but it was something else. It was crazy and we loved every minute.

Dayanna Guerrero: You just announced that you will be performing at Creamfields, which is a massive music festival, and you will be playing together with David Guetta, Avicii, Calvin Harris, Afrojack ,Steve Angello , Benny Benassi , DeadMau5 and the list goes on and on. Is this the first time you’ll be taking the stage at Creamfields?

Dimitri Vegas: Yes.

Like Mike: Creamfields is the first.

Dimitri Vegas: It’s a big honor and a big challenge. We’ve done a lot of big festivals but definitely if you would have asked me five years ago to make a list of festivals you want to do in your life, Creamfields is definitely one of those.

Dayanna Guerrero: As we mentioned before, you guys did a track with Afrojack and NERVO called “The Way We See The World”. This song was also the official anthem of Tomorrowland 2011 and one of my personal favorites. How did this collab come together and keeping in mind we will be interviewing NERVO later next week, what was it like working with them alongside with Afrojack on this track?

Dimitri Vegas: It’s been mostly a collaboration on distance. We didn’t really have the opportunity to actually sit in the studio all together because at a certain point NERVO was in the states, we were in Europe, Afrojack was in Asia and then we kind of switched places. We were in the states, NERVO was in Europe. I mean it was hectic and it was a really difficult baby to deliver but I think it’s fair to say it’s a very beautiful baby.

Dayanna Guerrero: So there was a lot of Skype?

Dimitri Vegas: Yeah, definitely. Long live the internet.

Dayanna Guerrero: Will we be seeing another collaboration with any of those artists in the future?

Dimitri Vegas: Never say never!

Dayanna Guerrero:Momentum” just hit #8 on the Official Belgian Ultratop Charts. This song is listed under “progressive” but to me it sounds like it has hints of other elements in it. In your words, how would you describe the sound of this track?

Dimitri Vegas: It’s kind of an experiment. It’s a different kind of track than we’re used to doing. We kind of really had to put the break on the whole production. Like the whole time we were working with Regi we kind of had the urge to say “okay this has to be a little bit harder..” but we kind of decided to make it mellow/melodic, [a] soft track . We’re really happy with the result and it’s really paying off, I mean from Belgium its really expanding to other countries so you never know where the story is going to end now.

Dayanna Guerrero: In about a month’s time you got over 100,000 fans added to the 300,000 you had on your Facebook. Seeing as your fans are greatly increasing by the month, do you have anything in the works that they can look forward to?

Dimitri Vegas: A lot! But not a lot we can reveal.

Dayanna Guerrero: Always with that! (Laughs)

Dimitri Vegas: But we’re working on a lot of stuff, were working on a lot of solo stuff. We’re working with a lot of great vocalists and songwriters to complete the whole package. Also for “Momentum” we’re doing a lot of great remixes. There’s still a lot of surprises coming up. I would definitely keep an eye on the movie we’re going to do about Wonderland LED in Miami, because we’re going to tease a couple of the new tracks in the soundtrack there.

Dayanna Guerrero: Well guys, thank you so much and we wish you good luck on your set.

Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike: Thank you.

Dimitri Vegas: Maybe I can add one more thing. One of the tracks that we’re going to do (and we’re probably going to premier in the next weeks) it’s going to be a collaboration with Steve Aoki & Angger Dimas. So that’s kind of a scoop there.

Dimitri Vegas , Like Mike & Dayanna Guerrero: (Laughs)
